LUFTSTREIKRAFTE UND LUFTVERTEIDIGUNG DER DEUTSCHEN DEMOKRATISCHEN REPUBLIK 1959
The First MiG-15s were delivered to the KVP (Kasernierte Volkspolizei Luft -People's Police- Air) as the East German Air Force was designated prior to 1956, in April of 1953; 101 aircraft, were loaned by the Soviet Air Force. However, the training of East German personnel on the aircraft was interrupted in 17th of June of 1953, motivated by the eruption of violent anti-Soviet uprisings. As a consequence of the uprising, all the MiG-15s were put back to Soviet control in the next month. It would take quite some time to resume the training of the East German personnel on the MiG-15. The LSK/LV (Luftstreikrafte und Luftverteidigung der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik- Air Force and Air Defence of the German Democratic Republic), was established on March 1st, 1956. The first unit of the LSK/LV to equip with the fagot was the Fliegergeschwader (Air Wing) FG 1 stationed at Cottbus; the first five MiG-15bis were officially delivered on 28th of June, 1956. These first aircraft were Czech-build MiG-15bis (S-103) and were by Czech pilots directly to the airbase. In September of that year the first trainers, UTI MiG-15s, were also delivered; these machines were also Czech-build machines (S-102) and 12 of them were initially supplied to the LSK/LV. Along with FG 1, several other units also operated the Fagot in East German Service: FG-2 stationed at Trollenhagen, FG-3 located at Preschen, Brandenburg, FG-7 based at Drewitz, also at Brandenburg, FG-8 in Marxwalde it too at Brandenburg and FG-9 located at also in Drewitz. Besides the Fighter units, the East Germans operate the MiG-15s in training units: Fliegerausbildungsgeschwader (Fighter Training Wing) FAG-2 and FAG-3 located in Bautzen, Sachsen and, in smaller numbers, in several other units. In East German service, the MiG-15s were tasked with air-to-air missions, attack, close air support and reconnaissance. The MiG-15bis did not serve long in LSK/LV service: starting in 1958, the aircraft was phased out, being replaced by MiG-17F. The trainer version of the aircraft did enjoy a longer service period, continuing to perform its duty until the 1970's. Most of the MiGs were operated in the natural metal finish; only some UTI-MiG-15 were eventually painted, receiving a grey overall finish or a green/dark earth top camouflage with a pale blue underside. The single-seat version had red serials painted on the nose: the trainers had black numerals on the nose.
