Fuerza Aerea Rebelde. Cuba, 1961
This is the second of two F-51 Mustangs operated by the Fuerza Aerea Rebelde. FAR-401 is an F-51D-30-NA Mustang, serial number 44-74505. It is an ex-Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF-9233) which was sold on the US civilian market after being retired from the RCAF. it received the civilian registers N68DR and later N3990A, before ending up in Miami, where it was bought by a certain Allen McDonald, probably an FAR operative. It is now preserved in La Havana. Despite being the first combat aircraft of the FAR, the Mustangs never saw any action in Cuba. It was not ready until the revolution was over in 1959. During the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, the two cuban Mustangs were damaged prior to the landings, and were not repaired in time to participate in the fighting. A few months later, they were replaced by Soviet-made MiG-15bis fighters.
