Attack Squadron 76 (VA-76) “Spirits“ USS Independence (CVA-62). Med Cruise, 1968 - 1969
The A-4 “Skyhawk” was one of the most important and active aircraft in the Vietnam war. Seeing action more in the first years of the war, the Skyhwak - also known as "Sooter" - flew basically bombing and close air support missions over enemy territory. The VA-76 was probably the most famous A-4C Navy Squadron to fly over Vietnam. Flying with this squadron, LCDR Theodore R. Swartz scored the only A-4 air-to-air victory durring the Vietnan War. His aircraft, flying from USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), shot down a MiG-17 using Zuni rockets in 1967. After the war, VA-76 planes were deployed on board USS Independece (CV-62) cruising the Mediteranean Sea. The VA-76 aircraft received a new paint scheme, the "AG" tail code, and some of them received red MiG-17 stencil markings over the air intake in honor of LCDR Swartz victory.
