Though flown by dedicated crews, trained solely for reconnaissance operations on RF-4s, and wearing the insignia of the 11th TRS, not all the Iranian recce-Phantoms were operated by 11th TRS. This example was deployed for several crucially important missions along the Shatt-al-Arab waterway, in autumn 1985 and winter 1986, delivering intelligence required for planning of the Operation Valfajr-8  the “decisive offensive” launched in February 1986 with the aim of capturing the Faw Peninsula, in southern Iraq. Interceptors of the Iraqi Air Force attempted several times to shot down this Phantom, but it survived all the missions returning safely with valuable loads of reconnaissance films. This RF-4E still serves at the TFB.3: while this air base has already in 1979 been re-named to “Nojeh”, most of IRIAF pilots still call it “Shahrokhi”.
