On July 23rd, 1966 over Vinh in North Vietnam, the vietnamese anti aircraft artillery hit the A-4E of the 39 years old Commander Wynn Franklin Foster, belonging to VA-163 based on carrier USS Oriskany. Foster was flying an Alpha Strike mission while was hit suffering the traumatic loss of his right arm below mid-humerus. At around 3.000 - 4.000 feets CDR Foster recovered his severed limb and with one hand pulled the ejection handle of his ejection seat starting the automatic sequence. The pilot jumped into the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin and was recovered by USN rescue team.
