721 Squadron, based at Aalborg Airbase, is the transport squadron of the Royal Danish Air Force, RDAF. The 721 Squadron currently operates the C-130J-30 Hercules and the Challenger 604. The dedicated crews and their capable aircraft perform a variety of missions; including VIP, ISR, MPA, Tactical OPS and fixed wing transport - all in support of the Royal Family, the Danish Government as well as NATO and UN. The squadron motto “Any Where – Any Time” evolves from missions accomplished worldwide, ranging from Greenland to Congo back in 1961 – including support of operations in Asia,  the Indian Ocean, Africa and the Middle East. However, the squadron’s heritage dates back to October 1926, where the Navy Air Corps 1st Air Flotilla was formed. Operating with aircraft on floats, the flotilla’s primary tasks were reconnaissance, fishing inspections, transport and SAR - similar to the current missions of today. The flotilla’s secondary tasks were of a more offensive character, such as bombing and torpedo drops. The 1st Air Flotilla operated in the North Atlantic part of the Danish Kingdom, including Greenland since 1932. The flotilla was disbanded shortly after the occupation of Denmark during World War II, where the aircraft were destroyed by a resistance group during a sabotage event in 1943. The flotilla was reborn after the war, and in 1950 the 1st Air Flotilla became part of the newly established RDAF and renamed 721 SQN in 1951.
