Soon after entering service with No.79 Squadron IrAF, the MiG-23ML proved it quality, when two planes from this unit were deployed to score the first confirmed kill against an IRIAF F-14 of the war. For the rest of the war, the No.79 Squadron continued mounting successful intercepts along the frontlines. During several air-to-air battles with Iranian F-14s and F-4s, the R-24R proved longer-ranged than the AIM-7E Sparrow, and by the end of the war the Iraqi MiG-23ML pilots were the most successful ever on the type. The plane is depicted in its standard camouflage pattern and post-1988 serial, as seen on one of MiGs captured by US troops at al-Assad AB, in 2003.
