Grizzly Troop (Provisional) 6th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment was activated on 15 May 2011 at Joint Base Balad, Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. Based on the operational need of USD-N Iraq, Grizzly Troop was formed from pilots and maintainance Troopers from across 6-17th Cavalry Regiment. Grizzly Troop was responsible for a battle space roughly the size of New Jersey.  It provided Reconnaissance, Security, and Close Air Support for 3 Advise and Assist Brigades, Joint Base Balad, FOB Warhorse, FOB Cobra, COS Speicher, Balad City, Baquaba, Samarra, Baiji, and Tikrit. Grizzly brought distinction upon 6th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment by flying 3,584 combat hours in its brief history and was always ON TARGET, ON TIME and OUT FRONT! When the Advise and Assist Brigade Commanders were asked if they would accept Attack Weapons Teams, the answer was always “NO, I want my Scout Weapons Team.” Grizzly Troop 6th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment was deactivated on 02 October 2011 at Camp Taji, Iraq.
