The VA-83 was the first USN squadron to deploy the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radar Missile (HARM) in combat ever, during the Operation Prairie Fire. On the evening of 24 March 1986, Corsairs from this squadron knocked out the first SA-5 Gammon SAM-site that became operational two times using HARMs.
