First flight on 05.12.1975, the prototype P.05 was due to be used for flutter and airframe load trials but was extensively damaged during a landing accident at Caselle during January 1976. After extensive refurbishment including a new forward section, it rejoined the trials fleet in 1978. In 1979 this airframe survived another accident when an AIM-9 Sidwinder accidentaly exploded while being shot from the Tornado over Sardinia. This aircraft was delivered wearing the red & white colour scheme of Panavia.
