1st Maresciallo Observer Pilot Giorgio Ciancia, born at Velletri (Rome) in 1951, was awarded his helicopter pilot's wings in 1975, and later qualified as a flying instructor on various helicopters in particular on the Agusta Bell AB-205 (UH-1).
In 1994, with more than 5,500 flying hours and as flying and weapons instructor, he was transferred to the 5° AVES regiment "Rigel" at Casarsa, and assigned the role of "Check Pilot" within the 27th squadron "Mercurio".
Besides his great passion for flying and his attachment to the service, Giorgio Ciancia has always displayed a talent for drawing and painting, and many of the crests displayed by the units of the "Cavalleria dell'Aria" carry his signature.
These two characteristics, the love of flying machines and an artistic disposition, have been combined in a huge production of helicopter profiles, notably of the AB-205, in which he performed the majority of his activity, clearly demonstrate his attachment to this aircraft.
